Send alerts to Slack

Slack alerts arrive through an incoming webhook, a single secret URL that Mortemain posts to. You create it once inside a tiny Slack app. It takes a couple of minutes.

1. Have a workspace ready

You need a Slack workspace and a channel for the alerts. If you don't have one, create a free workspace at slack.com/get-started, it takes about two minutes.

2. Create the incoming webhook

Go to api.slack.com/apps, click Create New App, choose From scratch, name it Mortemain and pick your workspace. In the app's left menu open Incoming Webhooks, toggle Activate Incoming Webhooks on, click Add New Webhook to Workspace, choose the channel, and Allow. Copy the URL it shows:

 your Slack webhook URL
https://hooks.slack.com/services/T00000000/B00000000/XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

3. Add the target in Mortemain

In your Mortemain dashboard, add a notification target:

  • TypeSlack
  • Name → anything you'll recognise, e.g. Ops alerts
  • URL → paste the webhook URL

Save, then wire it to the checks you care about.

Test it

Hit Test on the target. A message lands in the chosen Slack channel within a second or two, with a bold title line (the check name and its state) and the alert text below.
